Been thinking about adding a new alien ship after all.
1 - So far all alien attackers have one thing in common. Once you engage them, it's difficult to outrun them (in most cases). So what about a new alien ship that is incredibly powerful, has a greater range then the battlecruiser, but is very slow. Something that requires a hit and run strategy / long range attacks (e.g. Hydra or Crius) and can take out a Cerberus in 1 vs 1 action. Obviously, not many would appear at the same time.
2 - Why don't aliens have harvesters? Think about it. If they had harvesters, that would give you something new to worry about, since they would basically take the resources you want.
3 - A laser like turret for aliens. These poor suckers have almost no way to defend themselves against fighters. Let's give them a ship that can take down fighters quickly.
You may have noticed that I'm trying to level the playing field a little. Right now you can use most of your ships for any target. You can use a Hydra, a Cerberus, or a group of Centaurs to take out almost anything, but what if you had to carefully choose which unit to use against which kind of enemy. Wouldn't that be much more fun and strategic? If you detect and alien ship with "laser like" weapons, you wouldn't engage it with a Hydra, instead you would send a Cerberus for example. On the other hand, a large, slow ship with lots of armor would fall prey to a Hydras long range capability. The Crius is an in-between case, since it would work for both, but doesn't boast incredible firepower.
