First of all, it's been a while since I've been on the forums mostly because it seemed like the community died out, but NOOOOO we're still kicking!! Next, as a writer I've been thinking of writing a novel of the story in Space Borders: Alien Encounter called Space Borders: Homeworld and have even completed a basic outline/timeline of events based off of my 2nd campaign playthrough. Then the new update hit and a lot of the subtle things have changed, so I'll have to go back and rewrite some of the stuff, but tell me what you think of the idea! Discussing this could be a great opportunity for us to start establishing some canon and stuff, maybe even create back story for the characters!!!

Should the sci-fi level of the story be soft like Star Wars type or hard and a bit more realistic i.e. Newtonian motion, no sound in space etc.?

Personally, I like hard sci-fi. Realism FTW.
It'll be hard to rationalise the antimatter turrets though.

The antimatter turret isn't too hard, cause even if it's far-fetched at least it is a real technology that could definitely exist in the future. What I'm really struggling with is how to explain the flak turret and mothership artillery. Any ideas on how these weapons work?

Can't you just make the Flak Cannon fire actual flak shells?
No idea about Artillery though.
As for the antimatter, the problems are that producing it is really hard, and that I think it would actually be pretty ineffective.
It wouldn't be effective in any way as an actual "flak" type weapon, because antimatter-matter annihilation produces mainly photons, and maybe some heavier particles (IIRC). This in turn makes it pretty useless against...everything inorganic. And if the target has radiation shielding the weapon becomes essentially useless. Also if you're anywhere near the detonation (in space 'near' means a lot more than a few km) and don't have radiation shielding you would kill yourself. The only way it could be really effective is if you ram the antimatter bomb/missile/shell/whatever directly into the target, in which case you might as well have saved all the time, money and effort producing the antimatter and just have used solid slugs instead.
This is also the same argument against using nukes in space, actually. There's no more concussive effect and no thermal release, so the nuke would just produce gamma rays.

Then again, fiction, so... Fictional physics go?

Absolutely agree with Clinkzbone, if you want to, go for it. Don't know though, if trying to be overly scientific about it, is going to be that easy. Was just some scifi creativity. +1 regarding the rest of this post. Then again, fiction, so... Fictional physics go? That seems like the best approach, haha.

Agreed flak is flak. As for the antimatter...let's not get TOO scientific. Part of the art of writing SF is handwavium lol. Besides, the civilization in this game is one capable of terraforming planets and FTL travel and communications AND constructing ships that can last 30 seconds of continuous bombardment by advanced alien weaponry, which frankly, is amazing. Antimatter shouldn't be too much of a problem for these guys. We need to establish the rules for FTL. Do we go for classic hyperspace or warp? Wormhole? Finally Mothership artillery...we could just say the tech is super-ultra-kill-yourself-before-reading-classified-top-secret and vaguely suggest that it is related to the mothership's ability to create a black hole out of nowhere, and leave it at that lol.

@space Borders I think there should be a story about a random captain on the odyssues and there could be dialogue between missions!! just to entertain myself i already made up a story before evacuation happens. A story about a captain on the USS odysseus who lost his family when the planet exploded! Better yet: it could be You! the lieutennant who is the character in the story. we could also use VictorLeeder 's idea

maybe the ftl is like battlestar where it just instantly appears where you plot the jump too.

maybe the ftl is like battlestar where it just instantly appears where you plot the jump too. I think a warp FTL would fit the game better. Where the ships must travel for a time to their destinations in real space (not an alternate hyperspace) since that seems more consistent with everything that's already in the game. Like an Alcubierre Drive.
