One thing I noticed earlier and I'm not sure if you edited the AI at all last time but I bought a Behemoth and wanted to level it up, so I found a mastermind that manufactured battlecruisers and put my Behemoth just outside of weapons range and left it to run for a while, when I came back to my game the mastermind was moving very slowly and I haven't seen it do that before

Well, in addition to what's already been discussed, I personally feel the aliens arsenal is a bit lacking, they have 3 different turret/weapon systems and we have 6 or 7 now I believe, just making some new weaponry could go a long way in terms of difficulty and new tactics, if they had like a long range weapon or a weapon that's damage increases as it fires or something, or something in the beam weaponry department since we don't have to many laser weapons. Just something to give some of their ships a little extra POW if you know what I mean

Masterminds currently select a target and maintain a maximum distance to that target. It may have had a fix on something else which was moving and was further away. Just something to give some of their ships a little extra POW if you know what I mean I agree and we had that discussion before. I believe there is a thread dedicated to this topic. In any case, it'll have to wait until after the AI and a few other things are complete.

It wouldn't cause much damage if you take care of it fast, but should you choose to ignore it, you'll pay the price. That's a good suggestion, I'll definitely keep that in mind.

Here is how the different difficulty levels affect the AI. L1 - Rank: 0 L2 - Rank: 1, smart target selection L3 - Rank: 2, smart target selection, adv. mastermind retreat, L4 - Rank: 3, smart target selection, adv. mastermind retreat, adv. formations (I) L5 - Rank: 4, smart target selection, adv. mastermind retreat, adv. formations (II) - Smart target selection chooses target based on priority, difficulty, distance and rotation. When this is enabled, you should expect the AI to hunt down fragile and mission critical ships. It is quite possible that an enemy ship will pass one of your ships and attempt to get to another, more important one. Weaker enemy ships are also likely to avoid your big battleships and hunt down weaker ships instead, even if it means traveling a longer distance. - Advanced mastermind retreat. You may have noticed that sometimes masterminds tend to go right for your ships. They panic and go any random direction, the advanced retreat will allow masterminds to retreat in a direction that makes more sense, i.e. away from all your ships center position. You might be able to use this to your advantage though (that's all I will say). - Advanced formations. I've really been trying hard to make ships join one another, but the maps are very big and the ships are fairly slow, so this just didn't work. Anyway, to simulate advanced formations, I have allowed masterminds to spawn formations of two (@ I) and three (@ II) ships respectively. Typical formations are battlecruisers + destroyers, or destroyers + corvettes, etc. Just check it out. This will increase difficulty a lot, because you will have groups of powerful ships arriving all at once. Finally, with every increase in difficulty, the rank of all enemy ships go up, as usual. I did have a weapon in mind Space Borders i suggested in the wiki portal with a new alien ship with a unique weapon. The Ion frigate like the one from the home world series Ok, I'll check them out anyway, before adding any new features (not related to the AI).

I'm currently considering an additional feature that would allow enemy ships not only to target individual ships based on their importance, but also to consider the ships in its immediate surrounding when calculating the difficulty. This would of course be L5 only. Also: I have been thinking about swapping out the order of appearance of the advanced features. Let me know what you think.

I also have an idea to inspire people to try harder difficulty! How about higher rewards and higher resources from mining?? that could get people their challenge! ive seen in almost every game that harder gives out better things! (except in FTL of course) If so i may try to set it higher for myself!

Pls stop going off topic.
Also, play hard mode to get more resources so you can make hard mode not hard? Umm...
The difference between roguelikes and this game is that in roguelikes reset ALL progress between game runs, so it doesn't matter that you're getting better stuff on harder difficulties because the game will still be hard the next time you play it again.
But in this game progression is persistent, so if you give the player more stuff on harder difficulties the player gains more and more of an advantage as the game progresses. That makes the game easier and easier until it isn't difficult anymore.
At least that's my opinion.

If you want, you can start a new thread about this feature (using Wikia).
