I've been saving a bunch of money and finally bought a Hydra. It's awesome. Tiny fighter ships FTW. But now I want to expand my fleet of small ships. From my observations, I have seen that missiles are less useful, and that plasma, lasers and gatling guns are the most useful weapons overall. But I can't decide if I want to go with full plasma for good overall performance and the splash, a mix of lasers and gatling guns for overall good performance but uneven performance when not together, or a mix of all three for balance. Right now I think I'm going to go with full plasma but I want to see what other people think. If you could share your thoughts it would be much appreciated!

Are you talking about which type of smaller support ship to get or the main turrets for your mothership? For my mothership I go with 2 frontal plasma cannons with the other 4 spaces used for missile turrets. also have a cerberus and a hydra and that right there is a pretty formidable combo. Also have an assortment of smaller support ships, i have at least 2 of each of the dual-turret ships. The chain guns and the lasers are best for taking out turrets since they auto target those but the chain gun targets both ships and turrets, lasers only target turrets. Missiles and plasma cannons are best for all around anti-ship defense with the flak cannons used for the smaller yellow and purple floating enemies. I don't know if that helped but that's what i've come up with for an initial fleet set up. I'd say once you get 2 cerberus and 2 hydra would be pretty damn powerful.

To clarify: I'm talking about the small support ships. Hence the title.
Anyway, thanks for your input! I usually equip my mother ship with two laser turrets in front, two gatling turrets in the middle, and finally another laser and a healing turret behind. That's why I don't usually use other ships with lasers, because I already have three.
Also do you like using the flak cannons? I don't like to use them because of the slow turning speed. I prefer to use plasma that has a smaller splash but does more damage and turns much faster.
Lasers also target ships. You need to select the ship you any to attack though. They also do pretty pathetic damage.
I also don't like missiles because of the slow turning speed. They also do only 200 damage per shot. I would have thought they would do more actually haha. I prefer using gatling UBS that do less damage and but turn a lot faster.
And I'm saving for the capital ships after buying support.

Haha alright . Yea I used to have 2 flak cannons, 2 plasma cannons and 2 mini guns but turned out that wasn't doing too much damage so I switched to the 2 plasma, 2 mini guns and 2 lasers but that sucked for my style of play also so I finally switched to the 2 plasma and 4 missile and I can take out a battlecruiser fairly quickly since the missiles have a little bit longer range than the enemys' guns. Plus the Cerberus' missile and mini gun system works pretty damn well also, they do a crap ton of damage. I like the flak cannons if you have A LOT of smaller guys to deal with also they are pretty effective for splash damage across the enemy fighter ships. Yea lasers do weak as hell damage. Yea plasma cannons are great all around weapon systems. I had 6 of those at first for my mother-ship but that got out gunned quick after missions 3 and 4 so I had to experiment. I also used a repair centaur but that repaired slower than the health regeneration upgrade for the mother-ship. I use a 1 laser centaur, 2 mini-gun/missile centaurs, 1 2x mini-gun centaur, 1 flak centaur and I have the nuke centaur which I cherish like hell since it'll screw up the battle-cruisers enough for a quick mop up.
