It happens because the Odysseus' hyperdrive was miscalibrated so they have to stop in the middle of their FTL travel to fix it. Also, the description for one type of mission in conquest mode says something like, "You must escort a convoy. The convoy would normally travel FTL, but a dense asteroid field prevents this." All of which implies a warp FTL drive that takes time to reach the destination and that travels through real space.

I will give you more details regarding the FTL technologies used in the game, but it'll have to wait till tomorrow, because I'm very tired and really need to go to bed.

Never mind, I'll try to give a quick overview now. The problem is that the game insists on calling the ship FTL drive technology "hyperdrive", which is clearly not consistent with what actually takes place. Warp drive would seem to be a more correct description. Perhaps some changes could be made to the descriptions, to better suit what's going on in the game. As for the portals, they use a different kind of technology and should indeed put the ships into another dimension, just like a hyperdrive, making them disappear rather than accelerating them. The portals are designed to allow for very long range jumps. Sorry about the confusion here, but at the time it seemed easier to animate the ships FTL travel like this.

three3pryme aha I see now @space borders Very nice. So would the portal be a sort of artificial wormhole? That would partly explain how and why the ships use that wormhole (which I have started calling Falcata) at the end of The Offensive to get to the comm station sector. Anyways, i agree we should talk about this later. Gotta sleep...
